Global Hunger Relief Run 2017

I was 21-years-old and 2 weeks into my first real job. After a few days of manual labor at the Nashville Convention Center, I found myself standing in the exhibit area of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission talking about an organization that I was only beginning to understand. I may have been underprepared that year for my first annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, but I felt like I was doing something that mattered.

Twelve years later, I’ve served in a variety of roles at the SBC annual meeting, but this year, I feel like I’m working on one the most important project to ever come across my desk.

You and I have the chance to equip our Southern Baptist missionaries and ministry partners in their work to share the Gospel and feed the hungry around the world with just a few hours of our time in Phoenix.

A broad coalition of Southern Baptist ministries have partnered together to sponsor a Global Hunger Relief Run, including a 5k and one-mile Fun Run, in Phoenix, Ariz., June 14, in conjunction with this year’s annual meeting. Thanks to this incredible partnership, 100% of registration fees from those who participate go directly to feed hungry people around the world.

Global Hunger Relief is a partnership of seven Southern Baptist organizations who work together to meet global hunger needs: Baptist Global Response, International Mission Board, North American Mission Board, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Woman’s Missionary Union, LifeWay and the Executive Committee.

Through my work on this initiative, I’ve had the privilege to talk with those in the United States and around the world who receive GHR funds and use them to serve those in need. I’ve talked with Lane and Lisa*, working in Africa to save starving newborns in a country rampant with malnutrition. I’ve spent the day with Alvin Bagwell, a retiree who now serves tirelessly at the Good Samaritan Food Bank to share the Gospel with and feed those on the margins of society in North Georgia.

Each year, I, like you, come to the SBC annual meeting because I still believe we’re doing a work that matters. I’ve seen with my own eyes, and I suspect you have as well, how the work of Southern Baptists around the globe can transform lives for those on the brink of both physical and spiritual death.

Won’t you join me in this opportunity to put life-saving dollars into the projects of our Southern Baptist partners by signing up today for the Global Hunger Relief Run? Your 5k run or 1-mile walk could be a catalyst for changing someone’s life for eternity.

Register today online and meet us outside the Phoenix Convention Center at 6 a.m. June 14. Participants take a shuttle bus over to Steele Indian School Park for the race and will be back to the convention center before 8 a.m., in time for any business taking place. 5k participants will receive bibs with timing chips and winners will be recognized later that day at the CP stage. More race details can be found here.
